The Natural Health Centre, through Dr’s Alta Vogel and Kristian Leisegang, offers treatment for any functional or medical condition, based on the principles and practice of natural medicine. The focus is on the individual, and not on the disease, and the ability of the body to self-regulate and self heal. Treatment protocols include the use of homeopathy, related complementary approaches and nutritional and lifestyle advice based on the unique individual needs of each person.
‘The doctor of the future will give no medication, but will interest his patients in the care of the human frame, diet and in the cause and prevention of disease’
Thomas A Edison
The Patient as an Individual
At the Natural Health Centre, we treat each patient as a individual person, not a disease. We recognise that each person is a biochemical, psychological and emotionally unique individual, and that a disorder or disease process does not just affect a specific organ or tissue, but affect the whole person on all levels, with a corresponding shift in metabolic and biochemical function. This results in the various symptoms and signs of disease. The assessment and investigation into these imbalances is critical for accurate diagnosis and a personalised and effective management plan (treatment). It is essential that we get to know our patients as in-depth as possible.
‘Prevention is the medicine of the millenium’
Dr Ronald Klatz – President of the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine
Symptoms and signs of a disease are recongised as an expression of the natural healing ability of the body, and not the disease itself. It is a normal response to dysregulation and an attempt to establish proper function (homeostasis). The expression of signs and symptoms associated with acute or chronic disease is a reflection of the body’s attempt to self regulate. When the body can’t overcome the stress on the system (cause of disease), these symptoms persist as chronic disease.
Each person has the innate ability within themselves to overcome disease – you are blessed with a self healing and self-regulating mechanism. This process sometimes requires facilitation in order to stimulate the self regulatory process of the body. This is the aim of the practitioners at the practice. By utilising various techniques of natural medicine, we focus on stimulating this natural ability to overcome disease. In many cases this is possible, but limitations occur when disease is advanced and irreversible changes have occurred. We focus on self-regulation, treatment of disease and improvement of quality of life – not just the chemical control of symptoms and the delay of death.
‘The art of medicine consists of amusing the patient while nature cures the disease’
Voltaire
Empowerment of the Patient
Explanation and education is important for the patient, in order to make informed choices and take control of their health. The word doctor comes from Latin, and means to teach, with the word physician relating to nature. Together, your family doctor, or physician, should be a healer and, most importantly, a teacher. This healing and teaching should focus on natural living and not the chemical control of metabolic and biochemical functioning. This is a central philosophical core of the Natural Health Centre.
‘Most over-the-counter and almost all prescribed drug treatments merely mask symptoms or control health problems or in some way alter the way organs or systems work. Drugs almost never deal with the reasons why these problems exist, while they frequently create new health problems as side effects of their activities’
John R. Lee, M.D.
About the Practitioners and the Clinic
The Natural Health Centre is run by registered homeopaths, Dr Kristian Leisegang, M.Tech Hom (DUT), PhD (UWC), and Dr Alta Vogel, M.Tech Hom (DUT). The practice is located in Stellenbosch, South Africa, and was opened in April 2007. The practice operates as private cash based policy, but patients are usually able to claim back from their medical aids (this depends on the specific medical aid plan for each patient).
